Road safety competition winners

LISKEARD heats of the Juliette road safety competition for children aged between seven and 11 was held at Liskeard Junior School.

Questions for the competition, arranged by Liskeard area road safety committee, were based on a new publication, 'Arrive Alive'.

Quizmaster for the heats was Terry Sully, with the winners being the A team from Braddock School (comprising Caroline, Clare, Christopher and Vanessa) who gained 41 points out of 42. Other teams taking part were St Cleer Guides, Braddock School B team, Liskeard Junior School's A and B teams and a reserves team. The final for the Caradon Juliette competition will take place at Callington on March 9.

Winners of the Liskeard Jill competition for youngsters aged 11-16, held in Liskeard Public Hall and dealing with questions based on the Highway Code, were St Cleer Guides team 2 who amassed 61 points. Second were 2nd Liskeard Guides with a team of mixed guides from St Cleer and Liskeard third.

The quizmaster was Mr Sully, and the winners received the Terry Sully cup.

AT the first Liskeard Chamber of Commerce business meeting of the year, members staged a "round the table" brainstorming session to maintain the vitality and interest of the increasing membership.

The session was also staged to increase awareness of how the problems experienced in today's changing business world can be overcome more easily by pooling knowledge and resources.

This year the members will benefit from a greater number of useful and interesting speakers; and they are off to a flying start on Monday, April 2, at 7.30pm in the Lord Eliot, when Colin Breed MP has agreed to attend to answer pertinent questions in the format of "Question Time."

There were requests for occasional breakfast, luncheon and tea-time meetings or social evenings at various venues during the year and also visits to other business premises. The first invitation has already been received from manager James Brett to visit the Department of Employment later in the year

"Liskeard Means Business" and it will stay that way as they intend to continue to work together to promote the commercial centre. They agreed that networking has commercial benefits to all businesses and that the chamber members were not only shopkeepers, but also many varied trades and professions.

Best wishes were sent to the Fursmans, the ironmongers, from the chamber for a well-earned rest and enjoyable retirement.
