Appeal postponed

The Safeway planning appeal, regarding a scheme to expand the supermarket on the outskirts of Liskeard, has been postponed.

The appeal, which began last month, was due to resume on November 10.

A tentative date for mid-December has been put forward but local traders who want to attend and put forward their objections are not happy with that timing, pointing out that this is one of their busiest periods.

It is likely that the resumed appeal will not now be heard until the new year.

Concert in remembrance

A REMEMBRANCE concert will be held at the Public Hall in Liskeard on November 12 at 7.30pm, the same day as the town's annual Remembrance church parade and service.

Mayor's surgery

THE Mayor of Liskeard, Pat Ambler, will be holding a surgery from l0.30-11.30am today (Friday) at the town council offices at West Street, Liskeard. All are welcome to attend the surgery.

Planning move

A PLANNING appeal has been lodged regarding a site at Killigorrick, St Keyne, by applicants, Mr and Mrs R and L Buck.

The proposal was for the conversion and change of use of farm buildings to provide four holiday letting units. The appeal is on the basis that Caradon Council did not give notice of its decision within the appropriate period. The grounds of appeal state that although planning officers recommended approval, the planning committee deferred its decision.

Canine association

autumn show

LISKEARD and District Canine Association held its autumn show at the Royal Cornwall Showground and, in spite of some changes in the committee, this proved to be the best yet.

Some 1,300 dogs were competing in breed, agility and obedience competitions in the Exhibition Hall and surrounding paddocks. With approximately 80 different breeds on show, it was an interesting day for the hundreds of dog lovers watching and taking part.

Exhibitors had travelled from all over the South and South West, the Channel Isles and Wales, while judges were drawn from many parts of the UK. Many of the dogs entered will be among the 20,000-plus taking part in Crufts in March next year.

The Liskeard Show is unique in England, in that it is the only show where breed, agility and obedience competitions take place on the same day at the same venue. Celebrating its diamond jubilee in 1987, the breed show added agility classes in 1988 and obedience in 1997.

For several years the breed show was held in conjunction with Liskeard Agricultural Show, but with continued growth and new rules introduced by the Kennel CLub, who govern all dog shows, relating to tentage space, the association was obliged to find a more spacious venue.

Without a hard-working and dedicated committee, such success would not have been possible and the association is fortunate in that it has volunteers and dog lovers who are prepared to give their time and enthusiasm in staging shows for other to enjoy. For a show of this type, the next is in July 2001, dogs have to be registered at the Kennel Club and entries have to be with the secretary about a month before the show.
