Section lunch lined up for March

The woman's section of the Royal British Legion met in the branch headquarters on January 18.

President, Christine Pampling, asked the ladies to remember the relatives of Mike Cradick and Kath Mahoney. In the absence of the chairman, Carole Graves, the meeting was taken by the president. The minutes of the last meeting in November were read by secretary, Anne Mascard.

Members all agreed the Christmas meal at the Pencubitt Hotel had been a success. Mrs Pampling offered her home for a soup and sandwich lunch, this date to be March 14.

Speakers and trips had been arranged for the year, and treasurer, Peggy Sharp, said memberships were coming in fast with 150 already paid up.

The afternoon finished with a film show by Fred Broad of old and new Liskeard. Next month's speaker, at the meeting on February 15 at 2pm in the upstairs room of the branch headquarters in Barn Street, will be Val Pengelly.

'Babe Pig' is the next SMART film

The SMART Film Club gets off to a good start for the New Year with the showing of a great family film tomorrow (Saturday), January 29 - 'Babe Pig in the City'. Doors open at St Martin's Lower Church Hall at 6pm, lights down at 6.30pm, admission just £1.50.

The sequel to the first film 'Babe' in which a talking pig captured the hearts of everyone who saw it, this will be good entertainment on a winter's evening, which everyone can enjoy without having to leave the town.

The venture, organised by St Martin's Church, has been going from strength to strength since it began last year, bringing a much needed 'big screen' facility to Liskeard. It is non profit making and is seen primarily as a service to the community.

A talk on Buckland Abbey

The first meeting of the new Millennium of the South East Cornwall National Trust Association was a talk by the property manager at Buckland Abbey.

Michael Caxton spoke briefly about the history of the building which was owned by Sir Francis Drake, whose descendants sold it to the Trust in 1946. He also described the new initiatives there, such as a range of activities for the very young, including playing medieval games and making historical objects, such as pomanders, which can be used today.

An avenue of yew trees have had to be felled and that area is being turned into a garden which should be ready by next year. Richard Rednall, chairman, thanked Michael for his talk and announced the next meeting will be on February 14 at 7.30pm when Cynthia Gaskell-Brown will speak about the past of Mount Edgcumbe.

All SECTNA meetings are held at St Martin's Hall, Liskeard. Anyone wishing further more information please contact 01579 382729.

Raffle funds aid Heartbeat

Funds raised in l999 for Plymouth Heartbeat, through donations, raffles, stalls, street collections and meetings etc totalled £1,288.68.

This total takes in funds from the Christmas raffle, whose supporters included heart patient Jim Hardy of Dobwalls. The top raffle prize of £200, drawn at Plymouth Argyle's football ground, went to a Plymouth resident, Mrs Waldren, while Mr Hardy accepted a cake for a Landrake winner.

The overall funds raised during the year helped pay for an ice machine, microwave oven and two large television sets etc for Burrator ward at Derriford hospital.

A total of £250 was given to the British Heart Foundation towards research, and £100 was given to cardiac surgeon at Derriford, Mr Terrance Lewis, for medical books. The cardiac rehabilitation programme also received £300 towards an exercise bike.
