Homework Club offers free internet access
From Monday next, September 20, Liskeard Library will be operating its first Homework Club in the Resource Centre upstairs, and will be offering youngsters from primary up to 6th Form age the chance of free access to the Internet, C D Rom and I T.
The free facility is for three days a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and staff, led by Study Support Officer Anyon Nazir, will be on hand to help students with their queries. The sessions begin at 3.30 ending at 5.30pm and the library says it will be a good opportunity for parents to enjoy a couple of free hours while their children study.
Any child is welcome to any or all of the sessions as it is being run on a flexi basis, but already more than 15 applicants have come forward. Parents must collect and sign a permission form before youngsters can join.
The first 20 to take part will receive a folder of useful study items which is being sponsored by the Liskeard Job Centre.
The Beers serve up the burgers
Beer and burgers was the cry when Liskeard Town Crier, Frank Beer and his wife Beryl hosted a barbecue at their home in Pensilva in aid of the Liskeard Royal Naval Association.
The sun was almost as hot as the barbecue and members enjoyed the afternoon in the beautiful surroundings. They thanked their hosts for all their hard work.
Book your stall for Lions' Fair
St Matthews Fair is fast approaching, and takes place this year on Saturday, October 2. Organisers the Liskeard Lions intend to make good use of the new paved areas at the top of The Parade, and will be utilising part of the space on the west side for some of the entertainment which in recent years has been centred on Bay Tree Hill.
Lion George Hooper reports that this still leaves plenty of room for stalls, spaces still being available on The Parade and in the Cattle Market. However, those still wishing to run a stall should contact him as soon as possible as spaces are going fast. Ring him on (01579) 343906 to book your pitch.
The Lions also wish to remind everyone of their annual moorland walk for charity, which this year takes place at the later date of Sunday, September 26, starting from Minions between 9.30am and 10.30am. Entry forms are available from Crockers Newsagents on The Parade, if you wish to be sponsored for your club or charity, or you can just turn up on the day and enjoy the walk.
A new system this year means that all walkers, whether sponsored or not, just pay £4 each per adult and £2 for U15s, with no monies being taken from the sponsorships.

The Speaker Rev Lovewell told of his time spent in Mozambique and also in the Plymouth Dockyard. He was thanked by Margaret Hainsworth who told him that as he was so good a speaker he will be getting more bookings from other organisations who had representatives at the meeting.

Play at the church

The production 'Goodnight, Twentieth Century Goodnight' will look at great moments and songs from the century, in times of celebration or despair. Tickets at £3 are available from Manna in Liskeard or by ringing 01579 362949.
Volunteers needed
The Liskeard Friends group for the Children's Hospice South West is to hold its annual flag week from September 20-25 and would like volunteers to help with street and house to house collections.
The money raised will go towards Little Bridge House, which needs £1 million to be donated voluntarily each year to run. It is for children with life limiting illnesses, and also offers their families respite care.
Volunteers are needed for the flag week throughout Cornwall, and especially in Liskeard. Those who can help should contact Chris Hallam on 01579 345426.
Cyclists pass through
A young couple who spent 12 days cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End passed through Liskeard on Sunday. Rachel Iliffe from Oxfordshire and her boyfriend Giles from Devon, who met while at Cardiff University, set off on the 897 mile trip to raise money for five charities.
