IN this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday) we lead with an apology from the manager of the Torpoint Ferry in view of the anger and frustration caused to commuters by long delays after one ferry was taken out of action for a refit and problems developed with another one.

Manager David List admits that the ferry service’s performance over the last two weeks has been ‘unacceptable’ and says efforts will be made to undertake future maintenance more quickly.

Meanwhile South East Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray has been much in the news this week over her concerns about how the Prime Minister’s proposed Brexit deal may impact on the fishing industry. She tells us about why she is being critical of Mrs May and while she feels the proposed exit deal with the EU involves ‘broken assurances’. We also hear from others with views on Brexit.

In other news, a local schoolgirl was given the responsibility of chairing a Cornwall Councillors’ briefing at County Hall, and the Mayor of Liskeard has officially opened as new community ICT shite which aims to make it easier for local people to seek work, access Universal Credit applications and undertake other essential online tasks if they don’t have access to a home computer.

We also have guidance from Citizens Advice on how everyone can avoid being ripped off on the internet.

In other news, while one local town has taken over the running of its public library, another is planning a total transformation for its library – we find out the details of what is planned.

We have pictures from a memorial swimathon event in which relay teams raised more than £4,000 for the British Heart Foundation, and more pictures from a triathlon undertaken by five young girls from Saltash in aid of Children In Need. We also hear about a farm worker who has raised more than £2,300 on a 686-mile hike from Bodmin Moor to Scotland – and he still had the energy to climb up Ben Nevis too.

Meanwhile, a supermarket charity fundraiser has undertaken a skydive to raise funds for another good cause. Read her description of the experience.

We have more ideas for celebrating Christmas – and this week’s issue comes complete with a carol book to help those festivities to go with a swing.

For those involved in agriculture, we have our Farming and Equestrian page, and we also have regular weekly columns such as Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, TV Choice, the Cornish Times recipe and latest books.

There is all this and more in this week’s Cornish Times.
