In this week’s packed Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we lead with a plea by a sprightly 97-year-old South East Cornwall woman for help to find her treasured engagement ring.
She had worn it ever since her engagement 67 years ago but lost it on September 28, the day of the St Matthew’s Fair in Liskeard. On the day in question she also visited St Keyne and Minions.
Meanwhile a 100-year-old woman from Callington who is one of Tesco’s oldest living former employees has been honoured by the supermarket chain’s chief executive at his headquarters celebration marking the company’s own centenary.
We also report that today is decision time for councillors on the question of whether or not to spend money on raising the parapets on the Tamar Bridge in an effort to prevent incidents involving vulnerable people. We examine in depth the issues and options involved, as well as taking a look at the special training which has been given to bridge staff for dealing with potential suicide attempts.
We also look at why a high street bank is under fire in a local town over its cashpoint provision.
A huge auction of plant and machinery held in South East Cornwall made nearly £12m, leaving the director of the company concerned absolutely delighted, and an Aston Villa football legend has given a big boost to Polperro’s new defibrillator by cutting the ribbon to inaugurate it.
The magnificent efforts of the Liskeard in Bloom team over the summer have been rewarded with a gold award from the South West in Bloom judges, and a mother and daughter pair who ‘braved the shave’ have raised a fantastic sum for the charity Macmillan Cancer Support.
We also feature several intrepid women from the area who have been fundraising for charity by undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge involving the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, or trekking up the wild tors of Dartmoor.
We also take a look at recent protests staged by youngsters over the issue of climate change.
As well as lots of your community news and pictures and our regular columns like Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, your Letters, TV Choice and latest Books, this week’s edition has Farming, Leisure, Antiques, Property and Motoring sections, a special feature on the origins of Halloween plus a bumper 12 pages of Sport.
Find all of this and more in this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday).
