In this week’s packed 72-page Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday), we lead with the news that the new leader of Cornwall Council, Cllr Julian German, is putting the issue of climate change at the top of his agenda. His strategy also sees local councillor Edwina Hannaford taking on a brand new role as the county council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change.

We also report that Calstock Parish Council has become the second in the area to declare a climate emergency and call on the county authority and Government to make Cornwall carbon-neutral.

In other news, we have a number of colourful picture spreads showing Liskeard Hillfort Primary School pupils taking part in flash-mob style dancing in The Parade, crowds enjoying a sunny LostFest in Lostwithiel, action - including dragons! - from Callington MayFest, Duchy College students enjoying outdoor activities and challenges in West Cornwall, and WI members taking on the zipwire over the Eden Project biomes.

We also have a spread of pictures showing a sight that will gladden the hearts of Rame Peninsula commuters - one of the Torpoint ferries returning early from a refit in Falmouth – and another telling the tale of how rescuing a shy dog called Rolo from rocks at Whitsand Bay exercised the skills of RNLI personnel…and their families.

Students from Liskeard School and Community College have swept the board at an art and creative design competition, Polperro youngsters have impressed comedian Harry Hill with their jokes, and parishioners in Pelynt have celebrated the return of the famous Bishop Trelawny’s coffin plate after it was stolen and then turned up in East Anglia.

Cornwall Councillors have called for a review of parking permit charges, and they are also planning action to reduce county’s suicide rate given that on average one person a week takes their own life in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

As well as lots of your community news and pictures, this week’s edition also carries a 20-page Royal Cornwall Show pull-out, including a competition to win a pair of tickets to the show, and an eight-page Property section, plus another competition in which two lucky readers can win family tickets for a round of golf at Holywell Bay Golf in North Cornwall.

This week’s Cornish Times also has eight pages of Sport and our regular columns including Ray Roberts’ Nature Watch, Letters, Recipe of the Week, TV Choice and latest Books.

There is all this and more in this week’s Cornish Times, in shops from today (Friday).
