Cornish landmark St Michael’s Mount is aiming to dramatically reduce single-use plastic on the island in 2018.

Managers say a huge amount of work and research has gone into implementing the reduction of single-use plastics on the Mount for the coming season.

At the island’s eateries, The Sail Loft and the Island Café, plastic straws are no longer used (a small amount of paper straws will be available behind the counter), there are no plastic drinks bottles (drinks are only sold in glass or cans) and takeaway drinks cups and lids are now compostable.  Drinks stirrers are wooden and all ice cream tubs now have a plant-based lining and the spoons are biodegradable.

All bags are now paper (no cellophane) and napkins are from recycled paper.

There is a new tap refill station and staff are offered free coffee with their reusable cups.

All organic waste is composted on site.
