HUNDREDS of teddies have been winging their way from South Devon to Callington thanks to a kind-spirited ’knitting hero’.

When Gill Powell, an avid knitter, heard from her daughter Allison that Callington Lions Club were seeking volunteers to provide ’Teddies to take away tears’, she was determined to help.

Gill, 89, lives in Sidmouth and is a widow. She says that making the bears, along with knitting for her great grandchildren, has been helpful in keeping her busy during the lockdown.

’To date, Gill has knitted over 160 teddies - a magnificent achievement,’ said a Callington Lions spokesperson.

’Gill’s other skills include a City and Guilds in embroidery.’

If anyone has any spare wool which they can donate it would be gratefully received, says the club. Wool should be addressed to Callington Lions and dropped into Callington Town Hall and address it to Callington Lions.

Meanwhile, any local organisation who would like to receive some bears should contact [email protected].
