Second placed Falmouth Town duly completed their expected double of victories over Callington at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on Saturday, but the result hides a battling performance by the home side who spurned several opportunities to score themselves before the visitors hit four goals in the last 30 minutes.
Before the game, Falmouth were quick to make it clear that they were short of players due to injury and County call up but the same was true for Callington with no fewer than four of their first team choice players unavailable and so manager Ian Southcott gave a first ever Jewson start to teenager Chris Gerry. The youngster, another ex-Callington Colts player who has worked his way through the third and second teams, joined fellow former Colts Matt Hawke and Gary Williams in the first team line up.
From the start, Callington battled well and created chances against a Falmouth side who found it difficult to get out of their own half. Indeed the best chances of the first half fell to the home side. Paul Webber beat a defender and raced clear before laying the ball back to Rob Hawkens. But, with just the keeper to beat, Hawkens lifted the ball clear of the bar. Then the same striker shot straight at Falmouth keeper Steve Taylor just before the break. Add to this chances that were less clear cut by Gerry, Matt Hawke and Gary Smith and it was Falmouth who were more grateful to hear the half time whistle.
With the elements now in their favour, Falmouth stepped up a gear in the second period. As Callington struggled with the gusty wind in their faces, the visitors began to press and, on 60 minutes, were awarded a free kick about 25 yards out. As the home keeper Andy Brenton tried to marshall his way to defend the right post, Justin Ashburn flashed home the ball into the opposite corner to break the deadlock, much to the delight of the large travelling support amassed behind the goal.
Then 10 minutes later, Chris Tomlinson fired home the second from the edge of the area courtesy of a wicked deflection from a Callington defender and the game was over as a contest. Late on, Band made it three after going past Brenton and then in the dying seconds Ashburn grabbed his second and Falmouth's fourth when his looping shot bounced over the despairing keeper and into the net.
