TWO teenage musicians who want everyone to benefit from the power of music have helped to open an instrument library.
Sam Lakey and Alfie Dawes, both 15, have worked with Bodmin-based Cultivate Cornwall to launch Poly Rhythm at Market Arcade in Fore Street.
The scheme enables people of all ages and abilities to access a wide range of instruments free of charge – hiring out everything from violins and guitars to trumpets and trombones.
The system works with users setting up an account to rent their instrument in just the same way as taking out books from a library.
Cultivate Cornwall’s Harry Deacon said: “The aim is to improve wellbeing during these challenging times by encouraging individuals to pick up a new hobby or skill.
“We have witnessed the demand for such a service within youth groups in and around Bodmin, which is why we have worked with them to develop and run this service.
“At Cultivate Cornwall, we understand how important music can be for people and believe now is the perfect time to launch Poly Rhythm, as COVID-19 continues to bring challenges to our daily lives.”
The project is also committed to being part of a circular economy by reducing waste and encouraging the reuse of equipment.
Sam and Alfie, who helped set up the project, say they want to share their passion for music with others – and they’re hoping to expand the collection of instruments available and offer music sessions and lessons.
As Poly Rhythm is youth-led, it’ll also give the young people involved experience and new skills in running a community interest organisation under the guidance of Cultivate Cornwall.
Becoming a member of Poly Rhythm is completely free and with the current social distancing restrictions in place, an online booking system has been created.
Home delivery and collections of musical instruments can be made from 10am- 3pm Monday to Friday and 10am - 1pm on Saturdays.
