Roads were gridlocked on Monday as motorists attempted the school run in icy conditions. In East Looe, St Martins Road and Barbican Road, which has two schools and a nursing home along it, were at a standstill in the rush hour.

Tom Baker, 35, from Widegates, was with both of his children, taking one of them to Looe Primary School.

'There was total gridlock due to the very simple matter of the road not being treated with salt,' he said.

'Cars were sliding all over the place and so were mothers with children on the pavements.

'If an ambulance or fire engine needed to get through, they would have not stood a chance.'
