THERE’S a buzz around town as Callington and District Lions Club encourage everyone to join in with Honey Fair activities.
After the success of Callington’s Picnic in the Park, Lions president Jamie Dowdall said that the club had hoped that the Fair, which draws people from far and wide, could go ahead ‘live’ as normal.
But the Lions have reluctantly decided that with COVID-19 rates once again high, large crowds are not a great idea, and so the event will be mainly virtual.
With Honey Fair Day itself traditionally the first Wednesday in October, there’s still a range of activities for all ages happening this week, and all in the name of fun as well as raising money for good causes.
Go onto the Callington Lions Club Facebook page to find out more on the following highlights:
l Cream teas to be delivered to you/ a friend’s home as a special treat
l A ‘mufti-day’ at your school or business
l School art competition with paintings posted on-line for all to see
l An online musical creative competition
l An Auction of Promises.
l View the honey bees online and see videos and photos of a year in the life of a bee and bee-keeper.
The Mufti Day theme will be create a ‘John Trevithick’s hat’.
This is especially in memory of John, who reintroduced the Honey Fair in 1978, and who passed away in February 2021.
Honey Fair coordinator, Lion Hayley Patton, said: “Last year’s Virtual Honey Fair proved a popular event, with many participating in online activities.
“Thanks to the generosity of local people, a total of £2,200 was raised. This money was put to good use helping in the community, with contributions being made to Callington Food Bank, Cornwall Air Ambulance, Plymouth Soup Run, wheelchair provision, and many other worthwhile causes.”
Why not help Lions drive away the COVID-19 blues by helping pull out all the stops and assisting with events in town this year?
“We are a local community-based volunteer group and would invite anyone to contact us if they need our help – or, if they would like to offer us support,” said the Club.
“There are no bees on the street this year but, rest assured, Callington Lions will still be buzzing.”
