Hi-de-Hi! And if you even thought the words ‘ho-de-ho’, then a new Cornish production is for you – and a new generation has a chance to tune into a great British comedy classic.
The in-house Sterts Theatre Company, based at Cornwall’s unique open-air moorland amphitheatre at Upton Cross, near Liskeard, present the first of four brand new productions for Summer 2016, a riotous adaptation of the TV favourite Hi-de-Hi.
Set in a Butlins-style holiday camp in the 1950s, the TV series, created by comedy legends Jimmy Perry and David Croft, was a massive hit when it ran on the BBC from 1980 to 1988, starring Paul Shane, Ruth Madoc and Jeffrey Holland.
Now scheming comic Ted Bovis, innocent abroad Spike, man-eating Gladys Pugh, Peggy the bonkers chalet maid and all the other Yellowcoats return to Maplin’s Holiday Camp.
Performances will run through the summer: opening night is on Thursday, June 16 and future performances will be on June 18, 23 and 24; July 7 and 14; August 3, 10, 18 and 27.
Sterts is an arts and environmental charity with a mission to make access to the arts, whether performing, administering or watching, available to all. Each year the charity provides stage and back-stage opportunities for more than 200 local people in shows like Hi-de-Hi, ranging in age from schoolchildren to pensioners.
For 2016, Sterts Theatre Company also have new productions of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Oscar Wilde’s satire Lady Windermere’s Fan and the much-loved musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
