’YOUNG people are not immune from the effects of coronavirus’ was one of the key messages at today’s daily Covid-19 briefing from the Government.
Cabinet minister Michael Gove said there can be ’no slackening’ of social distancing and self-isolation and that these measures continue to be vital to limit the number of deaths.
People are being encouraged to contact the Government if they feel they are being made to work in unsafe conditions.
Mr Gove was speaking on a day when 381 more people have died in the UK after contracting the disease.
There have been 10 deaths so far in Cornwall and the number of cases confirmed in the county is 69.
Medical director for NHS England Stephen Powis says that if the country continues to control the spread of the virus, we will first see a reduction in infections, then a reduction in hospitalisations, and the number of deaths would be the last figure to reduce.
Meanhwile the Government has admitted its capacity to carry out testing is being constrained by the supply of particular chemicals, but that more testing centres are being set up.
Government medical officer Jenny Harries has apologised for the authorities being ’too optimistic’ previously on the provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for health care workers.
But Mr Gove said that 1,000 new ventilators would be coming off the production line at the weekend.
