A CAMPAIGN to help labourers, electricians, plumbers and other manual workers quit smoking during this month’s Stoptober campaign is coming to Liskeard.
Stop smoking advisors from the Cornwall Council Health Promotion Service will visit branches of builders’ merchants Jewsons including the branch in Moorswater, Liskeard.
Organises of the campaign say 35% of people who smoke in Cornwall work in routine and manual roles - jobs such as building labourers, electricians, plumbers, and van drivers, with around 44,000 people in these jobs across the county.
Routine and manual workers are the group with the highest smoking prevalence in the UK.
Miriam Brenton of the Health Promotion Service said: ‘It can be really hard to quit if you’re part of a team who stop for regular fag breaks.
‘We can help provide advice on ways to tackle this, or you might like some information on vaping.
‘Quitting isn’t easy, so this is about making it easy to find out what the first steps are and how you can get support. No judgement, just support.’
The service’s five top tips for anyone thinking of switching or quitting:
1 Set yourself a quit date in the near future.
2 Plan and prep – make sure you’ve bought vape products or nicotine replacement therapy.
3 Support – speak to stop smoking advisors and let friends and family know so they can be supportive.
4 Plan distractions to avoid trigger times. So after dinner plan to do something straight away or as soon as you get up in the morning, brush your teeth so you’re not tempted to smoke.
5 If you’ve had a blip, that’s okay. Get back on plan as soon as possible and keep going.
The Cornwall Council campaign is part of the national Stoptober quit smoking challenge.
Last year in Cornwall 467 people got help from the stop smoking service during Stoptober.
