Residents, their families and friends, or staff who worked at the former Morleigh group of care homes where poor standards of care were exposed are being invited to provide their views and experiences as part of an independent safeguarding adult review.

The homes included St Theresa’s in Callington, Tregertha Court in Looe, Collamere at Lostwithiel and Elmsleigh at Par. Poor standards of care at two of the homes were exposed in a BBC Panorama film in 2016, and further problems followed.

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Safeguarding Adults Board (CIoS SAB) has commissioned an independent chair to undertake the safeguarding adult review regarding the operation of the Morleigh group and the services it provided.

The review started in late October 2017.

Evidence from key agencies have been provided and reviewed and the board says that as a result of the information provided, it is now keen to hear views and experiences from residents, carers, families, friends and staff about patient care within the homes at the time.

Fiona Field, chair of the CIoS SAB said: ‘Everyone has the right to live their lives free from abuse and neglect, and all partners are committed to protecting individuals at risk of abuse or neglect and working closely with care providers to ensure that high quality care is provided for people who use services.

‘It is important that we learn from what happened from this case and apply those lessons to avoid similar situations in the future.

‘The review is not seeking to hold any individual or organisation to account or to blame, but is keen to understand how partner agencies could have worked more effectively to protect those in this situation.

‘If you have information or an experience which occurred between December 1, 2013 and December 19, 2016 when the group was sold to Cornwallis, please email [email protected]

‘We want to identify the lessons that can be learned from this and then recommend changes to improve practice, care and services in the light of these lessons.

‘If you have special needs or require assistance, please just send your contact details and we will call you back.

‘The information provided will help shape the final report, which we expect to complete  and published later this year. Your views may be included in this report but will be anonymous. If we need to share your information with third parties who work with us, we will let you know and seek your permission to do so.’
