Groups that support people on low incomes in the Liskeard area have been among those to benefit from a ‘Surviving Winter’ fund.

The £17,000 Cornwall Community Foundation money has been used for a variety of purposes, from purchasing warm clothing, slow cookers and bedding, to providing a vital £20 electricity top-up at a family’s moment of need.

The WILD Young Parents’ Project, which has 10 groups across Cornwall, said that their £1000 grant helped 52 people, including 22 children under the age of five.

‘Surviving Winter is such a valuable fund and it achieves so much,’ said Alison Richmond of WILD.

‘I cannot say how grateful the WILD Young Parents Project and the families we work with are. One young mother who lives alone with her six month old baby and does not have very much disposable income was awarded funding for some bedding and sleepsuits for her baby daughter. This has enabled mum to ensure her daughter is both warm and safe at night.’

Other groups which have used their share of the grant to help local people include CAB Liskeard, Liskeard and South East Cornwall Breathers, St Martin’s Church in Liskeard, and Liskeard Community Action.
