This year the NHS celebrates its 70th birthday and Derriford Hospital chiefs have organised an Open Day to celebrate.

The event takes place at Derriford Centre for Health and Wellbeing on Saturday, June 16 (10am to 2pm).

Some services will be showing what health care was like in the past, how it is now and what it might look like in the future.

On show will be equipment used in health care in decades past, for example old equipment used to test your hearing and old lenses and artificial eyes.

Changes in roles such as those of nurses and therapists since the NHS first started will be explored.

The event includes chances to step into a modern operating theatre, view unique historic library collections, discover more about blood  and the history of microscopy, find out how research has changed or try your hand at delivering a mock baby.

But the #NHS70 Open Day won’t be all looking back. A Careers Fair will enable those interested in being future staff and volunteers to find out more about the opportunities available.

The University of Plymouth will have interactive stands around podiatry and dietetics and will be bringing a training ambulance.

Plymouth Marjon University will be opening up the sports centre and health areas to demonstrate activities such as rehabilitation.

Defence Medical Group South West military colleagues will be taking part, and there will be a display about the Royal Naval Hospital Stonehouse.
