I refer to the front page article in last week's Cornish Times about the Dobwalls roundabout. Health and safety has gone mad! For the Highways Agency to refuse the Dobwalls Parish Council members permission to make the new roundabout at the edge of their village more attractive by planting it up beggars belief.

What about the roundabout on the way to Morrisons, which has its grass cut regularly and has several very attractive flower beds on it? I have seen central beds on roundabouts with trees on them, granite crosses, even concrete animals, do they have more accidents?

More likely to distract motorists are the bat bridges on the bypass – how many tourists wonder what that's all about? We could also have hired a team from the BBC's Gardening World to come down and plant up this roundabout for a fraction of the cost of the bat house and bridges.

I know everything has to be risk accessed these days but most drivers are not that stupid. All the roadside advertising signs are more likely to distract than a few shrubs or flowers.

Come on, you highways people, put on your boots and help Derek and his fellow councillors to liven up an eyesore that you have created.
