The head of Looe Community School Mrs Helga Turner, has put her wholehearted support behind the Millpool Centre Project group which hopes to see the building of a multi purpose centre providing facilities for the community, district and visitors.

She was one of two invited speakers at the third meeting of the project, who outlined their visions for possible future buildings. Mrs Turner described plans being put forward by the school governors for a much needed extension to cater for dance and drama education, but said £50,000 will be required.

Should this first step be successful then application is to be made to acquire Arts College status for the school which she said would result in grant aid from the Government to the tune of £100,000.

Mrs Turner drew attention to the large numbers of former pupils who have made the performing arts their chosen career, encouraged to do so by being involved in the many excellent school productions.

County Music Adviser Derek Kitt strongly supported these plans saying they would complement the Millpool Project.

Mr Ian Jones of Chadwick Jones Assoc-iates the Consultants, who prepared the feasibility study for Caradon Council on the former Looe Arts Centre Project, travelled from London specifically to present the proposals to the newly formed Millpool Centre Project Group, whose aim is to secure the building of a new multi purpose building of the highest quality on the town's Millpool area, to provide facilities for the community, district and for visitors.

With the aid of slides and diagrams he said the proposed building would meet the requirements of regeneration, sustainability, inclusion, return of investment and value for money for the whole of South East Cornwall. Furthermore he believed Looe was the only viable site for such a building in the district.

Mr Jones also said he was disappointed Caradon Council had decided it could no longer give financial support since in European terms this was a comparatively small and modest project.

He also expressed disappointment that as yet no support had been shown from Cornwall Council.

However, he drew attention to other funding sources which included the Arts Lottery, ERDF, and Objective One.

Project chairman Peter Bartram gave the vote of thanks and announced the next working party would be in Liskeard Public Hall on Tuesday, May 30 at 7.30pm.
