Wildlife lovers are being asked to check their gardens for humming-bird hawk moths in a bid to find out if one of the world’s most striking moths is attempting to colonise the UK. In recent years the warmer climate has seen the day-flying moth, which beats its wings 80 times every second to allow it to hover over food, successfully over-winter in greenhouses and sheltered locations in South West England. The organisation Butterfly Conservation wants people to look out for any humming-bird hawk-moths so they can build a clearer picture of their location.
