WEST CLUBS WOMEN'S HOCKEY LEAGUE
SOUTH DIVISION
Penzance 3
Caradon 3
Caradon traveled to Penzance last weekend and came away with a deserved point.
With a changed team sheet, the visitors welcomed Marcia Burgess and Michelle Giddy to the fold, and began their task of breaking down the experienced defence of Penzance.
Great interplay in the midfield meant the majority of possession was held by Caradon, so it came as quite a shock when the home team took the lead from a well-worked penalty corner routine.
So often this season Caradon have had to dig deep to get themselves back in the game and, after great work from 'Player-of-the-Match' Carina Batten, a penalty corner was awarded.
The consistent injection from
Amy Greenbank was met and struck sweetly by Glayne Price, and a slight deflection from Greenbank saw the scores levelled.
Caradon continued to play their passing game – and it was a defence-splitting ball from Jess Dukes that found Giddy, who expertly slotted home to make it 2-1.
The celebrations after this goal showed just how good team spirit is within the squad, with players running the length of the pitch to congratulate the scorer.
The first half came to an end when Penzance were awarded another short, from which they converted at the near post.
With Sharon Jeffery giving her last team talk of the campaign, Caradon went into the second period believing that the game was theirs for the taking.
Unfortunately the hosts had not read the script – and it was they who took the lead, despite a great defensive display by the travelling team.
A slight tactical change led to Burgess and Price controlling the center of the pitch, and with minutes left on the clock Caradon were awarded a penalty corner.
The Greenbank and Price routine led to a slipped pass to Clare Poad who powered home the equaliser.
The draw was a fair reflection of the game and, with third position in the League secured, Caradon can now look forward to next weekend, where an end-of-season celebration will come between two League games.
