The family of lost Polperro fisherman Daniel Kebble, have set up two separate trust funds in his memory, aimed at supporting those in the local fishing industry and helping to save lives at sea.
The huge congregation, estimated at about 700, which attended the 21 year old's moving memorial service at Talland Church on Saturday, has so far contributed £1,500, with more still coming in, to the new trust fund named after Daniel's fishing boat The Harbour Lights.
Daniel's father Terry said some of this money is to be used to purchase lifejackets for the crew of The Ryder, the 98 year old restored former lifeboat from Looe, which is kept at Polperro's Heritage Museum. The Kebble's are also supporting a campaign to get fishermen to wear lifejackets aimed at the whole of the fishing industry.
A separate bursary is being set up to help young fishermen establish themselves, and the money will be available, for those who are
qualified and registered, from the board of the Polperro Harbour Trustees, on which Daniel served. It is being set up primarily using the proceeds from the sale of Daniel's equipment and some of his possessions.
The family say that like most fishermen Daniel had to work very hard to cover high interest rates on loans and the money will help young local fishermen have a more solid start and enable them to buy quality gear instead of having to rely on hand-me-downs.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the Harbour Lights Trust can do so through the HSBC, Middle Market Street, East Looe.
