Matthew Lawther, a pupil in Year 3 at Burraton School, had the surprise of his life last Friday lunchtime when the Hairy Fairy of Pirate FM Radio Station arrived in the classroom and presented him with a computer laptop and printer. Matthew's dad, Mark, had sent an email to the Pirate FM programme that grants wishes, and Matthew's name was chosen from hundreds of applicants to receive a Christmas wish. The eight-year-old, who was diagnosed with diabetes in April of this year, has to have four injections a day and keep on a strict diet. His mum, Helen, is a teaching assistant at the school, so is able to give Matthew his injection at the right times each day. Mark, who had travelled down from Scotland where he is working, and Matthew's older brother, who is also a pupil at the school, were present at the ceremony. Pirate FM DJ Neil Caddy interviewed Matthew on air and introduced the Hairy Fairy – a man more than 6ft tall and dressed in a pink tutu. On presenting the computer, he told Matthew that he too had diabetes, and had been having four injections a day since he was 16 years old.
