Just before Christmas it was reported that Cornwall councillors will be considering a recommendation to increase their basic allowance together with extra allowances for the leader of the council and fellow members of the council's ruling executive committee.

Furthermore, they will be considering giving the chairwoman of the council a £16,000 'taxi allowance', whatever that means! Presumably this will be on top of the normal travelling allowance to which she is entitled.

Surely, even the thought of increasing allowances is grossly insensitive in the current economic climate when so many people are finding it hard to make ends meet. Our councillors must lead by example!
