GRAND bard Maureen Fuller has described her delight and surprise at having been nominated by her peers for a special award.
Each year, the bards of the Cornish Gorsedh recognise those who have given outstanding service to Cornwall through a particular achievement or dedicated work in their field, be it sport, music, literature or language.
Mrs Fuller, whose bardic name is Steren Mor (‘star of the sea’), has been awarded the Ambassador’s Trophy for her work to promote Cornwall all over the world.
‘I have really enjoyed meeting new people from all walks of life and I have especially enjoyed travelling to Australia, Brittany and Wales to promote Gorsedh Kernow, where I have made some wonderful friends,’ she said.
‘That would be enough in itself, but to have my work recognised in this way is very humbling.’
Mrs Fuller, from Landrake, has been Grand Bard since 2012. She will pass the leadership role on to her successor, Merv Davey, at the Open Gorsedh ceremony to be held in St Austell on Saturday, September 5.
Special awards will be presented on the day to individuals from the worlds of gig rowing and rugby, as well as musicians, teachers, and the founder of a charity which protects woodlands, ecosystems and ancient monuments in West Cornwall.
