County Division One Gorran v Grampound Road II NEWLY-promoted Grampound Road fought out a spectacular run feast on a good, firm wicket at Gorran on Bank Holiday Monday, where over 500 runs were scored for the loss of only nine wickets – and one of those was a run out! A feature of Gorran's innings was a splendid century from 18-year-old Matthew House, who followed up his unbeaten 90 against Perranarworthal last week with a superb 106, which contained 18 fours and a six. He and captain on the day, Robin Kendall (64), put on 116 for the third wicket (Gorran's captain Chris Lovell missed the match due to work commitments). James Tomlinson hit four gigantic sixes in making an unbeaten 46 at the close. Grampound Road wicketkeeper A Baretto played his part for his side, conceding no byes but taking two smart stumpings to dismiss both House and Kendall. Set 250 to win, Grampound Road began with an 89-run partnership between Matthew Manuel and Matthew South. Left-hander Manuel top-scored with 57 and South made 47. Former County batsman Tim Walton was dropped off Rob Daniel's bowling before he had scored, but it was a spectacular diving catch on the mid-wicket boundary by that bowler which eventually dismissed him for 39. It was ex-Glamorgan player and visiting captain Martin Roberts who saw his side home with two balls to spare, hitting three sixes in his 45 and adding 54 with Tim Manhire, who recently transferred from Redruth. For Gorran, their second team captain Daniel, borrowed to help out the senior side, was outstanding, returning figures of 12-4-27-1. He deserved much better in a splendid spell of bowling. Tomlinson took two for 72, but it was former County bowler Phil Johns, playing his first game for Gorran, who might well have won the game for them. Coming late into the attack, he took two for 33 in five overs as the visitors stepped up their run chase at the close. Naturally, Gorran were disappointed not to have held the visitors in check, but it was a good game played in a sporting manner by both sides. Grampound Road (17 points) beat Gorran (7) by five wickets. Callington's home game with Gorran on Saturday was postponed the day before, after heavy early morning rain went through a hole in the covers! Meanwhile, Gorran require scorers for both their first and second teams. The second XI require a scorer for all their matches, whilst the first XI would like to find someone to score at home matches. The reward? Pleasant company, often a good game of cricket, a player's tea, and afterwards, a pint and a pasty!
