A LONG-time campaigner for a cinema in Liskeard hopes a new licence to show films at the Public Hall will pave the way for a mainstream cinema in the town. The Public Hall in West Street has the potential to show films every week on a new 20ft x 10ft screen after Caradon District Council granted the licence. And Katrina Dawe, who has helped gain support for a multi-screen cinema, hopes supporters' hard work will be rewarded. 'This is good news, and it could be a stepping stone for something better,' she said. 'We need a full cinema with three or four screens, we have had overwhelming support for it. 'I think there are a couple of sites, West Street Infant School for example, that could be used. 'This would back onto the Public Hall, which could then be used for arts films, but not mainstream cinema.' An individual or group is now required to run the film shows at the Public Hall. Some of the equipment is already available, although a projector is needed. There are no restrictions on the age certificates of films that can be shown. Films will be shown frequently in the main hall apart from when it has already been booked. For more information, or to volunteer help for the project, contact the town council offices on (01579) 345407. Meanwhile, Katrina Dawe is planning to hold a meeting later this month to discuss the best way of moving forward the campaign for a multi-screen cinema in the town.
