Investment is still being made in the area, despite the recession.

Plans to build a new store, including a veterinary centre, have been given the go-ahead in Liskeard.

'I am really pleased to let the people know that we will be building an additional unit on the Bubble site,' said developer Tony Lawson.

'It will be a Pets at Home store as well as a veterinary centre.'

Work is to start in the next few months to build the single building at the Bubble site in Liskeard after plans were approved by Caradon council.

Mark Andrews, assistant head of development control at the council, said: 'There is space in the retail park and we felt it should not adversely affect the viability of the town centre.

'It will provide additional facilities for the residents of Liskeard that aren't there at the moment.'

It is hoped the development, which has been in negotiation for around seven months, will be complete by the end of the year, creating between seven and ten new jobs for local people.

'These are very difficult times but people are still investing in schemes like this one in Liskeard,' said Mr Lawson.

'I first came to Liskeard in 1986 and by 1992 I had started work on the Bubble site.

'That was during a downturn in the property market and so we hope we will be able to help out in this recession.

'We want to show that Liskeard is still a desirable place to invest.'

The planning application was supported by Liskeard Town Council.
