Golf - St Mellion to host English Men's Amateur Championship

For first class golf look no further than the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion Golf and Country Club this Summer.

This prestigious Tournament will be held between the 26th-31st July. Admission is free and spectators are guaranteed some truly outstanding matchplay from England's top amateurs. The Championship will be decided over 36 holes on Saturdav 31st.

Last weekend saw the Nadin Rowe Cup, a medal event with a maximum handicap of 24, contested at Looe Golf Club. Dave Allen, who has been threatening a good performance for some time, recorded a net 62 to secure a well-earned victory. Stuart Horton finished in the runner-up spot with a net 64, while Brian Shiel headed a group of three players with 66.

Looe Golf Club held their annual Ladies Open Day on Tuesday last when the challenge bowl was won by Mrs Fran Hunn (Looe) with 86-24=62

First handicap, Mrs Jenny Hall (Looe) net 64; second, Mrs Jane Tate (Looe) net 67; third, Mrs Margaret Bunton (Looe) net 67; fourth, Mrs Nicky Brenton (Looe) net 67; fifth, Mrs Shirley Nicholls (Looe) net 68; sixth, Mrs Pat Westaway (Whitsand Bay) net 69; seventh, Mrs Lorraine White (Whitsand Bay) net 69; eighth, Mrs Annette Sweeney (Yelverton) net 70. Best back nine - Mrs R Hicks net 32; best front nine - Mrs A Brook net 34 and a half.

In-form Peter Tyler, partnered by William Aust, took the honours on count-back on Monday when Looe Vets played a four ball better ball S/fd from guest Richard Robson and John Jones, with 45 points.

Third place went to Vets' stalwart Doug Hibberd, playing with Brian Duck (43) followed by Norman Allen and Pete Smale, Jack Baxendale and Jeff Buckland, Gerald Bassett and Ray Taylor, George Robson and Mike Phillips (42); Albert Quinlan and John Richards (41); John Hicks and Arthur Hallam (40); John Blake and Mike Row (39); Rob Ingold and Irvine Edmondson (37); Bob Kinch and Frank Carpenter (36).

A very hot day greated the players for the July Medal on Thursday which proved to be a very close contest. Dave Turner (87-17=70) was victorious, closely followed by Norman Hill-Male (77-6=71), Peter Tyler (90-18=72), Norman Allen (89-17=72), Arthur Hallam (88-15=73), Jeff Buckland (90-17=73), Brian Taylor (93-20=73), John Richards (101-28=73), Andre Radondy (98-23=75), John Jones (95-20=75), Mike Row (95-20=75), Rob Ingold (98-21=77), Cecil Bourchier (102-24=78), Brian Duck (99-21=78), Irvine Edmondson (103-23=80), Richard Essam (92-12=80), Frank Carpenter (97-16=81), Richard Fletcher (97-16=81), Doug Hibberd (110-28=82), Ray Petipher (105-19=86) and Albert Quinlan (113-26=87).

The heat took a lot out of the players as there were 10 N/R's and one of these was heard to remark that "His expectations for the day far exceeded his skills" which I must say applied to the writter of this article and a few of the others.

Looe Vets played another home match when Staddon Heights were the visitors. Good conditions greeted the teams, which prevailed to help produce some splendid golf.

The match ended being halved, with the results as follows (Looe first) - Ray Petipher and Irvine Edmondson lost to Ray Bloomfield and Terry Quintrell 1&3; Harry Foster and Ray Taylor beat Stan Foster and William Chapman one-up; Dave Turner and Norman Allen lost to George Ashton and Terry Johnson 3&2; Harold Ferris and Norman Hill-Male lost to John Robinson and Marshall Plummer 2&1; Brian Taylor and Norman Taylor lost to Malcolm Parkinson and Peter Murray 2&1; Andre Radondy and Gerald Bassett beat Murray Smith and Alan Royall one-up; John Blake and Brian Duck beat John Stirling and Dave Jackson 5&4; Cecil Bourchier and John Richards beat Gordon Moore and Ken Trace one-up.

The club greens and catering staff presented everything well for the day.

On Tuesday last a Better Ball was played by WHITSAND Bay Veterans. Winners were R Jenkins and K Pomeroy with 44 points. F Brelsford and A Sykes 44; N Harrop and C Hancock 43.
