Dave Turner, Looe Vets new captain, held his form when playing with Irvine Edmondson on Monday in a 4 B.B.B. which they won with 45 points. Gerald Bassett/Arthur Northfield came second on count back from Harold Ferris/Cecil Bourchier with 43. The first of the winter eclectic was played on Thursday when a good turn out of 34 took part. John Richards set the the tempo for the season with a score of 43, second place went to Brian Taylor on count back from Norman Hill-Male with 39. Irvine Edmondson came fourth with 38, fifth Peter Tyler on count back from Mike Phillips 37.

Once again Whitsand Bay met Tage Hald and his team from Scandinavia for the annual match. The day was overcast but very little rain. This year the scoring was arranged by the visitors and it would appear that only they understood it. The result - Scandinavia 4, England 3.
A strong blustery S.E. wind made golf extremely difficult and favoured the better and more experienced golfers for Maxfli SW Open Winter Foursomes 1999/2000 part two of first round at Yelverton on Sunday. As a result only five of the 32 matches went to the 18th green and no matches required extra holes to obtain a result.
Surprise results included Mike Lavers the holder of the Amateur Course Record at Yelverton playing with the Devon County Captain Dave Roberts despite being three up after six holes being beaten by Ian Northey and his 15 year old son Mark by a margin of 2 and 1. China Fleet Professional Bobby Moore playing with China Fleet's General Manager David O'Sullivan was beaten 4 and 3 by Richard Keith and Edward Shapland of Looe. Keith and Shapland with handicaps of 12 and 14 respectively dropped only 5 shots to par over the 15 holes they required to dispose of Moore and O'Sullivan
Notable results included - brothers Martin and Jerry Butcher of Torquay Golf Club had the easiest of wins on the day overcoming Yelverton's Kevin Norris and Paul Woods by 8 and 6. Thurlestone Professional Peter Laugher playing with three handicap amateur Daryl Day won by a "Dog's Licence" (7 and 6) over Yelverton's Derek Silk and Chris Snow. Dainton Park Professional Martin Tyson and Mart Broughton went from 2 down after 6 to 2 up after 12 with birdies at the 7th, 10th, 11th and 12th holes before completing a comfortable win by 3 and 2 over John Chapman and his son Chris.
Another pair who had four birdies were ex-Yelverton Professional Iain Parker, now based at Femdown in Dorset, and Jon Davey (Yelverton) against another former Yelverton Professional Graham Goidring and Bernie Pennington of Tavistock winning by 3 and 2. Former winners in 1995/96 Darren Desmond (Assistant Professional at Tavistock) and Pymouth University student Pete Southcott were two under par in beating Elfordleigh's David Jones and Roger Webb by 6 and 5. Another previous winners of the tournament, Tony Clarke (Staddon Heights) and Eddie Anning (Wrangaton) nearly pulled off a shock result losmg by one hole to one of the leading all amateur pairings of Dave Eva (Thurlestone) and Nick Lane (Wrangaton) having been 5 down after 9 holes.
After the first round 17 of the 23 Professionals who teed up in this year's event are left in and looking to collect the £1,000 prize for the leading Professional.
Second round matches to be played on Sunday October 31.
St Mellion International Ladies Section the Founder Cup was played for on Saturday, with Kirsty Gray being the winner with a score of 86-18=68 with Norma Boath the runner up with 91-22-69.
