On Monday last Looe Golf Vets played a very strange scoring game introduced by the captain when winners were Norman Allen, Arthur Northfield and Brian Taylor with 27 points. Second place went to Jeff Buckland, Mike Row and Ron Ingold with 29; third place went to Peter Tyler, Ray Taylor and Harold Ferris (32). Other scores were Richard Essam, John Jones and John Blake (33); Gerald Bassett, Ray Petipher and Doug Hibberd (34); Harold Ferris, Jack Hawkins and Jack Baxendale (35); Arthur Hallam, Harry Foster and Alan Reed (36); Frank Carpenter, William Aust and Irvine Edmondson (38); Norman Hill-Male, Andre Radondy and John Richards (41); Dave Turner, Brian Duck and John Hicks (41).
On Thursday, the second leg of the winter eclectic was to be played but as the weather appeared to be so bad this was cancelled and a single stableford was played. However, the weather cleared up in a short time so we enjoyed our round with the honours going to Norman Allen who is playing very consistently with 39 points. On Monday the Looe Vets played a 4-B-B-B. Arthur Hallam scored the Vets first hole in one for at least a year on the ninth which was celebrated on the return to the club house. Well done Arthur.
First place went to Richard Essam and Harry Foster 44 points with second place going to Arthur Hallam and John Richards followed by Brian Taylor and Jack Hawkins; Dave Turner and Brian Duck.

Thursday the Vets played their annual match against the ladies for the shield, captained by Fran Hunn the ladies put up some stiff opposition winning four and a half to three and a half. Tea was taken afterwards when the ladies were congratulated and presented with the shield
Whitsand Bay Veterans played their October Monthly Medal on Friday 15th. The winners were:
Division One - R Jenkins 81-13=68; R Bennett 81-12=69; L Wilton 82-12=70.
Division Two - M Dyer 88-20=68; H Pryn 91-19=72; P Moore 95-21=74.
On Tuesday the Vets played a two from three stableford. Winners were - L Wilton, R Cook and G Barrett (78); D Foster, B Wright and J Hoar (76); R Jenkins, T Doyle and A Sykes (70).
Whitsand Bay Veterans Section game on Tuesday last was played in teams of four. A stableford, two best scores to count. Winners:- D. Foster, D. Rawlings, R. Bennett, R. Cook 89 points. T. Dart, R. Chris Hancock, this year's Whitsand Bay Veterans Section captain, had very much the same weather as the 1998 captain, rain and very high winds, but the sun also came our for Chris' last game.

After presenting the prizes, Chris Hancock thanked his wife Mary for the excellent buffet lunch she arranged, also Rite, Gunvor and Di for serving same. He also presented the ladies with a bouquet of flowers in appreciation of their good services.
A draw was held for charity. The winners were: - D Polkinghorne; R Hughes; D Barrell.
Last Sunday saw the first round of the Looe winter league - a competition played over 16 rounds with the best six placings to count. Despite a poor weather forecast 63 brave souls turned out, the course being slightly dampish. It was playing long but despite this Phil Pond and his partner Mike Trembeth headed the field with an excellent 47 points - just one point behind him were no less than four groups, such was his standard of play that more than half the field recorded 40 points or better.

In the second round of the Winter League on Sunday - in windy conditions - Jules Hignett and Dennis Edwards led the field home with an excellent 44 points, one point clear of three groups on 43 points, John Nicholls and Dave Bennett; Brian Hodge and Richard Fletcher and Steve Hobbs and Pete Williams. Already at this early stage of the competition, some familiar faces are showing - but there is still a long way to go.

St Mellion International Ladies Section held a coffee morning last Thursday with a bring and buy which resulted in £180 raised for club funds. After a match was played between the captains and vice captain's teams with the vice captain's team being victorious.
On Tuesday Oct 26 the AGM was held when Mrs Stella Hancock handed over the captaincy to Mrs Maggie Bassett. After the business formalities there was a presentation of prizes as follows -

On Thursday, October 28, 24 pairs of fossils and ladies played the winners being Peter Booth and Joyce Wilcox with 45 points on countback from Peter Rawlinson and Ann Galbraith 45, with Cedric Ducker and Caroline Shannon in third place again with 45 on countback.
Fourth place - Roy Halliwell and Norma Boath 43 points. £225.50 was raised for Macmillan nursing services the new lady captain's charity.
