The team of Adam Frayne, Ben Welch and Richard Ackland performed brilliantly against a very strong field of county sides consisting of some of the best amateur golfers in the country.
The competition was based on the two best gross scores each day, on the Par 70 course. Adam Frayne shot 67 and 69, Ben Welch shot 70 and 71 with Richard Ackland shooting 74 and 68, to give the team an aggregate score of 274, 6 under Par.
This was a fantastic score on a very good course in testing conditions, and was 7 shots clear of their nearest rivals Yorkshire and Sussex, who tied in 281.
This is the first occasion that a team from the South West of England has won this event and Adam, Ben and Richard can be very proud of their achievement, against a field of such quality.
The St Mellion team will now go on to represent England in the European Team Championships, to be held in Rome, Italy on the 5th - 11th November 2001.
