Liskeard-Looe head coach Mark Goldsmith took 'a lot of positives' out of Saturday's defeat at Hayle.
From the kick off Hayle went on the off-ensive; they spent the opening spell in the vis-itors' half and on six minutes were rewarded when fly-half Mike Crump kicked a penalty. Not to be outdone, Liskeard-Looe took their chances – and five minutes later Yestin Hutchings collected from a breakdown five yards out and dived in for a well-deserved try.
The rest of the half was closely contested, neither side really in control, or seemingly, likely to score. In the dying seconds, though, Hayle sneaked in a useful three quarter move for Rob Goodman to score.
The second period opened much as the first had ended, Hayle initially putting on the pressure but being denied by a strong Liskeard-Looe defence, and then having to defend desperately themselves to keep ther visitors at bay.
Eight minutes in, the hosts extended their lead with a Crump penalty. For long periods, Liskeard Looe were deep into Hayle's territory, but were unable to break the stronghold of the opposition defence.
Hayle made good use of counter attacks, and on 59 minutes No.8 Tom Outram ran in a try.
Coming back into the game, the Lions again forced their way up field, and on 62 minutes James Noel-Johnson kicked a penalty, which turned out to be the final scoring action.
Goldsmith admitted: 'It was a disappointing result for us. I think, on reflection, Hayle probably deserved the win, but only because of our failure to complete on the chances and opportunities we had created.
'I would say that possession and territory were pretty evenly split between both teams, although at times we were forced to defend our line. We have got to take a lot of positives out of this game.'
