Carmella Kurn, 32, who grew up in Liskeard, and husband-to-be Richard MacGillivray, 35, who now live together in Falkirk, Scotland, dug their car out of deep snow and drove more than ten hours in treacherous conditions to make sure they got to their wedding on time.
It was the bride's wish to have a winter wedding in the town she grew up in, but after heavy snowfall and more forecast the couple made the decision to travel down more than a week early to ensure they didn't get stuck.
'We weren't meant to come down until this Friday, but we made the decision that we needed to get out of Scotland,' said Carmella.
'When we left there was more than a foot of snow and a lot of the main roads were down to one lane. It was getting out of Scotland that was bad.'
Richard, who is from Scotland, added: 'We are used to snow up there, but it is unbelievable at the moment. It has been the worst snow Scotland has had in about 30-odd years.'
The concern is now that Richard's family and friends who live in Scotland and the north of England may not be able to get down to witness their big day. Carmella, who said she was excited despite the drama, said: 'I think I will be a lot calmer once Richard's family get here, because there has been another three inches of snow since we left. They need to get down here as his family has half of his outfit – we only have the bottom half with us.'
It isn't just the problem of getting the groom's family down, the couple are having their wedding reception at Looe Bay Holiday Park, which has been experiencing trouble with frozen pipes. More than 30 caravans have been booked for the wedding guests.
Paul Higgins from Looe Bay Holiday Park said: 'We had not been anticipating this cold snap, which is continuing, but we are making all efforts to make sure the guests have their accommodation and have a really good weekend.'
The couple, who have been together for 15 months, are due to get married at St Martins Church, Liskeard, tomorrow (Saturday).
