A NEW look for Callington's annual Gala Day has taken a step backward as few exhibitors could be found. Gala Day, held annually on the second Saturday of July, was to be a Celtic Festival this year. Many aspects of Cornish culture were to be promoted including music, food and drink – but another local show has already taken many bookings. A meeting of the show's organisers has now been arranged for next week to sort out the problem. 'The town clerk has done some research into possible people to get people in,' councillor Andrew Long said, 'only to find they are at Liskeard Show this year. 'Although we've been able to get a Cornish dance group to come along, we haven't got much else. 'We have to look at whether competing with one of the biggest shows in Cornwall is a good idea.' Gala Day was originally started following the demise of the town's carnival. Due to increasing insurance costs the carnival, a traditional finish to the day following the Liskeard Show, had to be stopped. For the past few years the day has consisted of an afternoon of activities at the Saltash Road Recreation Park including a dog show, stalls and games. The day is finished off with a concert. 'We do need to speak to organisers of Gala Day,' cllr Long added. 'It may be that we go ahead with the same as last year and sit down and discuss the best way ahead and build it from there.' The Gala Day meeting will be held next Tuesday, March 9.
