A FUNERAL was held for a former Saltash Citizen of the Year and president of the town's Royal British Legion. Four standards walked ahead of the coffin, draped with the Union Jack, for the funeral service of Phyllis Kitcatt, who died on January 10, aged 89, at Malvern Nursing Home. The service was conducted by Rev Ian Souter and Rev Jeff Howden. Phyllis was born in Saltash – one of eight children – and attended the town's North Road School. In 1941 she joined the ATS and married Bill Kitcatt in 1944. They lived in Redhill, Surrey, for many years, where Phyllis became manageress of a shoe shop. Bill and Phyllis then moved to Saltash, where she joined the Royal British Legion and was awarded the Legion's gold badge for her long and dedicated service. She was a case worker for the club well into her 80s and, as branch fundraiser, was also very active in the annual Poppy Appeal. Her niece, Linda Dodwell, gave the eulogy and Richard Richardson, of the British Legion, gave the exaltation, which was followed by the last post, and two minutes' silence.
