TWO ARMY cadets were given the trip of a lifetime after being chosen to represent their country on a trip to Australia. Liskeard platoon's cadets Roger Cooke and Sophie Gill travelled to the other side of the world and joined American, Canadian and Dutch cadets on a two-week exchange programme. 'It was a fantastic opportunity with so many amazing people,' said Sophie. 'I have made friends from all over the world and I would love to go back.' The cadets were taken to Leeuwin Barracks near Perth before heading out on a 16-hour coach trip to RAAF Learmouth in northern Australia. They then spent five nights camping in the outback, where they saw giant spiders the size of a large hand, as well as taking part in abseiling, mountain ridge walking and various military activities. 'They might be on the other side of the world and have different cultures to us but they sure know how to have fun,' said Roger. The second week the cadets went back to Leeuwin Barracks where they took a visit to a wildlife park, went on an Aboriginal heritage walk and got the chance to play the didgeridoo.
