LINKS between a Cornish town and the largest regiment in the British Army have been reaffirmed.

The Rifles Regiment has a lineage going back to the 17th century: the modern day Rifles has been formed through the amalgamation of various county regiments, including the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry.

Mayor of Liskeard Simon Cassidy and town clerk Steve Vinson travelled to Wyvern Barracks yesterday to present The Rifles with the Freedom of Liskeard.

This symbolic gesture affirms The Rifles as part of the town’s heritage, said the mayor, and, it’s hoped, will forge ever-closer links between the service community past and present and our part of South East Cornwall.

The Freedom of Liskeard also allows The Rifles to march through the town on parade with ‘drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed’.

Councillor Cassidy said: “It was an absolute honour and privilege to present the The Rifles with the Freedom of Liskeard.

“The Rifles, who are the largest regiment in the British Army, are our County Regiment and can trace their history back to 1702. Throughout their history men and women from Cornwall have filled their ranks and served with distinction. Our Cornwall Army Cadet Force wears their Cap badge and many veterans live in our community.

“The Regiment were extremely proud to receive this honour and presented Liskeard with a silver bugle as a symbol of their thanks!”

During the visit, presentations were given on what The Rifles, both regulars and reservists, are doing across the world today, and on the activities of the Army Cadets in Cornwall.
