CALLINGTON town councillors have rejected proposals for improvements to be made in the town. The £15m plans – which would include more parking, residential flats for the elderly, a state-of- the-art modernised town hall and a chain of well- known retail shops – were refused after councillors disagreed over parking issues and costs of the development. Councillors at Tuesday's monthly meeting were concerned that cllr Chris Thomas's plans – which state that there will be no extra cost to the people of Callington and to the council – could be misleading 'as everything we do in our local community comes at a cost'. Callington portreeve Andrew Long said: 'In regard to the plans which were given to us, the council has objected because we believe that there is no such thing as a free lunch.' Instead, the town clerk has avenues for a £250,000 grant which will give the current town hall a makeover. The council has already been given £18,200 to take this forward. A planning application has been submitted to Caradon District Council and it is hoped that it will be given the green light.
