Safety measures

for a blackspot

THE county council is to carry out safety improvements at the notorious Fowey Cross junction where the road from Fowey meets the A390 between St Blazey and Lostwithiel.

The road is to be widened at the blackspot, and a 'ghost island' formed, with new signs also promised. A telegraph pole may be relocated as well, to improve visibility for motorists turning right from Fowey towards Lostwithiel and Lanlivery.

A county survey discovered most accidents which occurred there did so when it was wet.

Two thirds of the crashes in which personal injuries were reported were due to vehicles being hit from behind, while most of the others resulted from motorists pulling out in front of fast moving traffic on the A390.

Boxes of

festive gifts

A TOTAL of 22 wrapped shoe-boxes filled with gifts for children in Eastern Europe have been donated by Fowey's Fimbarrus Fellowship as part of Operation Christmas Child.

For their meeting last month the Fellowship heard from Martin Holmes who journeyed to Albania last year to distribute such boxes.

During their December meeting today (Friday), in the church hall at 2.45pm, Fellowship members will hold an afternoon of Advent readings and carols, followed by mince pies and tea.

Treffry gift

boosts fund

THE fund to restore Fowey's parish church has exceeded its target, thanks to a £50,000 donation from the late David Treffry.

The donation has taken the fund past its five-year target of £125,000. It has been boosted still further by a £5,000 donation from the estate of another Fowey resident, the late Piet Mendels. The church's annual gift shop, from which profits go to church funds, has also brought in £1,800.

Keith Monks, the chairman of the Friends of St Fimbarrus church, who have been heavily involved in fund-raising, spoke of the Friends' thanks for the donations. The thanks were also extended to Dr Naurooz Ismail who let the charity use his premises next to his dental surgery at no cost.

Work will be starting in the New Year on the restoration of the organ at St Fimbarrus.
