Prince's foreword
for yacht club book
PRINCE Philip has written the foreword to a new book which has just been published on the history of the Royal Fowey Yacht club.
The book 'A Fowey Jig-Saw' has been written by Joan Coombs, who has also included the history of the town of Fowey within its pages.
Prince Philip's connection with Fowey stems from his friendship with General Sir Frederick 'Boy' Browning, the husband of author Daphne du Maurier. The General, who was Controller of the Household at Clarence House at one time, was a keen sailor, as was the Prince who frequently sailed his yacht on the river at Fowey.
Joan Coombs is married to Gordon, who is now Commodore of the yacht club, which was founded as a gentleman's club. They moved to Fowey in l993. One other former Commodores included Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.
'A Fowey Jig-Saw' can be obtained from the Royal Fowey Yacht club, Whitford Yard, Fowey for £14.95 plus £2 postage and package.
Items sought
for exhibition
ARTEFACTS from the eight decades covering the life of Daphne du Maurier are being sought for an exhibition in the church at Tywardreath, which will run during this year's Daphne du Maurier festival.
The du Maurier committee in Tywardreath wish to exhibit items from the years spanning the author's life - 1907-89. They would especially like to hear from evacuees to the area during the Second World War, who have now settled in Cornwall, and also wish to receive any photographs or artefacts from that period.
The event is to run from May 11-20. Anyone who can help should contact the village post office on 01726 812151 or Janet Hewer on 01726 813372.
