Launceston Golf Club's Captain's Day competition was played in glorious weather on a testing course from medal tees well set back in most cases.

Club captain John Bassett greeted each player as they came off the tenth green, and treated them to refreshing drinks provided by St Austell Brewery.

The competition was a stableford played off three-quarters handicap.

Several good scores were carded, but the eventual winner was former captain Paul Hicks, who came in with 37 points for the captain's prize of a pair of matching hip flasks and a silver cup.

In his speech, Paul thanked the captain for all the work he had put in during the year, and expressed his thanks to Graham and his groundstaff for presenting the course in such excellent condition.

Meanwhile, it was a quiet week for Launceston Seniors, as the Club hosted a PGA competition for the first three days.

Last Friday the team played host to Lostwithiel on a course still offering the fast greens prepared for the professionals.

Lawrence Bailey, returning from a short break, was pleased to play with captain Robin Johnson, especially as they recorded the best result of the day winning by eight with six holes to play.

Tim Johnson, meanwhile, was nicknamed 'Magnetic' by his opponents, as they noticed some form of attraction between his ball on the green and the hole.

Paul Roach won nearest the pin for the home team – not for the first time – and a pleasant day on the well-prepared course was followed by a carvery.

The Men's Guest Day was played at Looe Golf Club, and the weather remained superb throughout.

There were some fine scores recorded, and the winners were M Andrew and C Ugalde with an excellent 47 points.

Second place went to A Rowe and M Symons on 45 points, pushing K Small and B Jenkins and A Soady and S Graber into third and fourth places respectively on count-back.

There was also a 'twos' competition and 15 players received five balls each for achieving one.

The following day the Midsummer Madness competition took place (a fourball better ball competition for members, with a shotgun start at 8.00 am).

The winners were the husband and wife team of P and B Hodge with a score of 44 points, relegating the all-ladies' team of J Wailes and S King to second place on count-back.

A score of 43 points secured third spot for the two juniors, S Allman and P Down, while fourth went to I Puckey and M Jefferies on 41 points, relegating A Soady and J Eades to fifth on count-back.

Sixth was filled by G Jedwab and N Hurst on 40 ahead of D Waters and T Day by virtue of a better back three holes.

The 21st Founder's Cup competition took place on on the Kernow Course.

With warm and dry weather and the greens in fine condition, the Stableford format was ideal to support the occasional mistake.

Scoring was high, with Clive Rides on a handicap of 17 producing the best round of the day with 43 points – two ahead of Peter Pascoe on 41.

The Fossils entertained Woodbury Veterans last Friday over the Kernow Course, and produced a splendid performance as they ran out 6-2 victors.

A total of 24 ladies played in the Grace Stevens/Medal competition, and the winner with a score of net 60 (83-23) was Rose Rodmell, ahead of runner-up Louisa McCartney.

The Medal and Stableford winners competition was played on Saturday, as 16 ladies took part.

The winner with a score of net 55 (74-19) was Leslie Robinson ahead of Moyra Evans (net 59).
