Tributes have been paid to former Looe mayoress Margaret Gardner who died on Sunday following a long illness.

Mrs Gardner was the wife of Sid Gardner who served as the mayor between 1990 and 1996, and it was her support for her husband during that period, and throughout their married life, that brought warm praise from current mayor Ron Overd this week.

Mr Overd said Mrs Gardner had provided the feminine touch by standing alongside her husband during the many official engagements he attended and had been an able ambassador for the town.

'Before he became mayor, Sid had also represented Looe on the county and district councils and he was always ably supported by Margaret – she was a smashing woman and was a great asset to the town,' said Mr Overd, who added that she had been greatly missed when illness forced her to seek full-time nursing care.

Supporter

'In her own right she was a great supporter of the community and was involved in many local organisations, including the Looe Valley Singers of which she was an active member for many years.'

Mrs Gardner is survived by her husband Sid, son and daughter Colin and Valerie, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral service will take place at the Glynn Valley Crematorium near Bodmin on Thursday, October 2, at 10.15am and will be followed by a thanksgiving service at the Riverside Church in West Looe at 12 noon.
