Second qualifying round Porthleven 0 St Blazey 3 The Green and Blacks booked their place in the first round proper with a professional performance at Gala Parc. With the wind at their backs, Blazey had the better of the first half but it was from the penalty spot that they took a 22nd minute lead. Damon Mulready fouled Dale Band in the area for Justin Harrington to smash home a trade mark penalty. Blazey were well in control by then and Jamie Densham's run saw him shoot narrowly wide before a second goal came on 32 minutes. A mix-up between defender James Greet and goalkeeper Steve Taylor, who failed to gather the ball, let in Band to steer the ball into an empty net. With the job well in hand Blazey tended to relax after the break but Port were still unable to find a way through a well-organised defence. Porthleven's hopes suffered a further blow midway through the half when Eddie Dunn was sent off after accummulating two yellow cards. Blazey finally made the tie safe five minutes from time when a quick ball out the defence found John Hodge, who coolly slotted the ball past Taylor.
Liskeard Ath 1 Bemerton Heath Harlequins 4 It will not come as much consolation to Blues boss Dave Leonard, but at least their worst performance of the season so far came in the shape of their exit from the FA Vase at the hands of Wessex Division One side Bemerton. Leonard is normally one of the most articulate and eloquent of managers, but when his post-match comments consisted entirely of 'a disgrace' and 'disgraceful' it would do well for his players to take note. Short, not sweet, but pretty close to the mark after this game at Lux Park. Liskeard began fairly well and took the lead in spectacular and speculative fashion when full back Gary Williams let go from fully 35 yards and saw his effort fly over Luke Haviland in the Quins goal, and over the line via the crossbar. The Blues should have been two goals to the good six minutes later but after rounding Haviland, Jamie Morrison-Hill took far too long on the ball and his eventual shot was blocked by a plethora of defenders that had by then gathered on the goal line. Bemerton took full advantage of the to let off to draw level in the 22nd minute, Neil Cole benefiting from good work by Stuart Findlay to shoot low across Simon Zinn from 15 yards. With both teams utilising their pace on the flanks, the match was proving pleasing to the eye, though the visitors should have scored when Nathan Renyard ended all his good work with a pitiful finish. The second half saw the Blues look another gift horse in the mouth when Dominic Richardson was fouled by Jamie Boswell in the 60th minute, and then blasted the subsequent penalty straight at Haviland who was able to beat the ball away. By now Liskeard were beginning to show signs of imploding as Quins began to get up a head of steam, their two quicksilver strikers Findlay and Jack Slade causing plenty of problems. Those problems were exacerbated in the 67th minute when Brinton Nute, ignoring Zinn's instructions, turned Renyard's cross into his own net to put Bemerton into the lead. Things got even worse for Liskeard in the 78th minute after they were torn apart by the pace of a move involving Cole and Findlay which afforded Carl Jones the space and time to shoot past the exposed Zinn. Liskeard briefly but ineffectually spluttered into life, but it was Bemerton who were in control of the tie, and they ensured their progress two minutes from time when Jones ran on to a flick from Cole to fire past Zinn from 12 yards to leave the Blues battered, bowed and out of the Vase. Saltash Utd 1 Clevedon Utd 2 (after extra time) Another home defeat, more missed chances and another failure to close out a game was the familiar theme coming out of Kimberley Stadium after this FA Vase defeat by fellow Toolstation Division One opponents. It could, and probably should have been so different for the Ashes who just do not seem to be capable of learning from their mistakes, much to manager Leigh Cooper's annoyance. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance that the side put in, but we just didn't take the chances we created that would have won us the game,' said Cooper, who will no doubt be wondering just how simple he will have to make his instructions to his side so that they understand. 'I am disappointed because this performance deserved a victory and should have seen us progress in the competition, but again we didn't close the game out and their equaliser was a real killer for us,' added Cooper. Saltash's first chance of the half fell to James Alexander, but the midfielder's audacious 30th minute 40-yard lob was just gathered by backpeddling Clevedon goalkeeper Mark Selway. Brian Jefferis then smashed a goal-bound volley from the edge of the penalty box in the 44th minute only to see the ball scrambled away from danger. Saltash goalkeeper Adrian Lamerton was called into action in the 52nd minute, and he did well to thwart Graham Cheeseman in a one-on-one situation as Clevedon rang a small alarm bell. Saltash somehow seem to receive help from the opposition on a regular basis, and this handy trend continued with Adrian Woodland not only fouling James Donnellon to concede a 60th minute penalty, but also receiving a red card for his troubles. Jefferis stepped up to score from the spot to give the Ashes the lead and it seemed the home side were on their way. Not so – step forward Alexander, who negated his side's numerical advantage by being sent off in the 70th minute after receiving his second yellow card for an off-the-ball incident with Ben Murray. Clevedon equalised two minutes from time when Adie Price picked up a loose ball near the halfway line, ran unchallenged to within shooting distance and promptly dispatched a screamer past Lamerton to send the tie into extra time. Damien Thorne then put the visitors in front in the 118th minute when he ran on to an Adam Tudor pass through a static Ashes defence before flicking the ball past Lamerton. Cooper must have felt that familiar sinking feeling resurface once again when, in the last minute, Mike Norman set Donnellon up with a glorious chance only for the striker to want too much time and the opportunity, as was the tie, was lost.
Millbrook 2 Newton Abbot 3 Millbrook never really recovered from being reduced to ten men after just 20 minutes after Gary Ashton was sent off for two yellow cards. Although Millbrook struggled manfully, Devon League Newton Abbot took the lead though Sean Friend after home goalkeeper Mark Henwood's mistake from a 29th minute Steve Mason free kick Millbrook's woes increased six minutes later when a misplaced back pass was intercepted by Richard McDermott, who ran on to score with ease. Millbrook reduced the arrears in the 45th minute when James Cooke volleyed home a rebound after Bryan Stacey's initial shot had come back off an upright. Newton Abbot responded by increasing their lead on 68 minutes when a free kick by Liam Ford was headed home at the far post by Dave Clark. Millbrook however scored their second goal of the tie in the 73rd minute when Rob Eddie's cross was met by Stacey to head the ball over Newton Abbot goalkeeper Pete Ryder. Millbrook increased the pressure on their visitors and Cooke was denied a second goal five minutes from time when Ryder tipped the Millbrook striker's header over the bar and thereafter Newton Abbot held on to progress to the next round.
