This game started slowly, and indecision by Wadebridge 'keeper Mark Gears nearly led to an opening for Mike Southgate.

Wadebridge's leading scorer Adrian Hart was foiled by Ashes' 'keeper Charles West after 10 minutes. The visitors took the lead with just 15 minutes on the clock, but Rodney Gregory had a goal-bound shot parried by West but it fell at the feet of Johnny Murt to score.

Mark Nanacarrow nearly doubled the lead two minutes later, but this time West pushed his shot onto the upright and gathered the rebound. Ex-Bridger Matt Penry was unlucky on the half-hour, picking up a clearance from Gears, he tried lobbing the 'keeper from 40 yards only to see his effort headed off the line by Neil Richards.

Ashes equalised six minutes later when their skipper Nigel Pugh headed home a Matt Lantham free kick from the edge of the box. Just before half-time, Hart failed to convert a long punt upfield from Gears.

Saltash came out at the start of the second half in determined mood and almost took the lead when Southgate was thwarted by Gears, who saw Andy Green's follow-up hit the woodwork. Penry nearly put Ashes in front after 56 minutes with a glorious 25-yard right-footed curling shot following poor work by the Wadebridge midfield.

Two minutes later, Wadebridge drew level folowing a corner, and the intervention of the referee. Andy Green, in an attempt to clear the ball, sliced it back across the goalmouth where Charles West saved it on the goalline. After consulting with his assistant, the referee awarded a goal. Ashes had to reorganise afterwards when their inspirational skipper Nigel Pugh limped out of action to be replaced by Andy David.

Although there were no more goals for the crowd to enjoy, there was plenty of goalmouth action.
