Callington Res............................6
St Dominic.......................................0
THE fact that Callington's 'keeper didn't have to make one serious save for the whole of the match highlighted the dominance that Callington had in this match and with better finishing should have had double figures in this Division Four (East) encounter.
Callington, with Dean Martin and Matt Reid controlling mid-field played football above the standard for this league and with young striker Kev Blackford going through a purple period, another four goals today they are going to be the team to beat in this division. Matt Reid and Andy Shorten added two more goals.
Hard work and strong running from Keiron Ruck was also a feature in this game adding to the increasing presence of Mike Vanstone and Craig Leyley, another of Callington's youngsters giving Callington's management selection options.
Division Three
Tideford disappoint
Tideford...........................................1
Lanivet.............................................4
IT was probably more in disappointment than in fact when the home side felt they had not played well. Although only the fourth competitive game of the season, the previous three had been won, and greater things were expected.
Sunday morning reflection on the encounter brings a different view and a reminder of the football cliche about taking chances. Although Tideford had started the stronger, during which time they took a 1-0 lead when Peter Heys lashed in an unstoppable shot from all of 25 metres, the game then became very even for a period before the visitors slowly took control, to be the stronger side at the finish. However, when summarising events, Lanivet had three corners from which they headed two goals, two free kicks on the edge of the Tideford penalty box, one of which led to a goal, and only about two attacks which really threatened, from one of which they scored. Apart from conceding the goals the home keeper was barely troubled.
At the other end, Tideford forced the same number of corners, which came to nothing, witnessed the visiting goalkeeper make at least three blinding saves, miskicked in the six yard area and had two more blocked on the line. So in terms of the number of chances created it was a fairly even affair, and the distorted result comes about simply as a result of the number of opportunities that were converted.
Having said that, the Tideford defence will know they made it easy for the visiting forwards to take those chances, and it is unlikely that so many of the rearguard will have such a collective bad day again. Had they defended man for man like their opposite numbers at the other end it would have been a different result. The Lanivet scorers were two each for Andy Penhall and Steve Hosken.
Premier Division
In-form 'keeper
Polperro........................................4
Padstow...........................................1
IN a very entertaining game that was played in less than ideal weather conditions, it was the home side who scored first when, after 20 minutes a slick four man move down the left saw the ball squared across the goal where Dave Gilbert was on hand to knock the ball home. From the kick-off Padstow pressed hard and within five minutes drew level when Polperro failed to clear a corner kick and the ball was tapped home to make the score 1-1.
This incident seemed to spur Polperro on and although Padstow worked hard they could not contain the Polperro midfield trio of D Gilbert, the in form K Faulkner and P Bain who set up attack after attack resulting a superbly taken goal by J Richardson on the half hour. After 40 minutes another quick move, this time down the right, saw J Richardson cross for P Bain to slide the ball home at the far post.
Despite starting the second half 3-1 down, Padstow were certainly not out of the match and in deteriorating weather conditions launched a series of raids on the Polperro goal but try as they might, they could not break down a solid Polperro defence and with home keeper Barry Collins in fine form, there was just no way through for Padstow.
The second half, however, was not one sided with Polperro continually threatening the Padstow goal and 15 minutes from time, with a thick mist cloaking the entire pitch, Phil Bain was yet again on the end of a Jason Richardson cross, only to see his powerful header rebound off the post, however fellow midfielder Kevin Faulkner was on hand to calmly slot the ball home to make the final score 4-1.
A very entertaining and good mannered match was superbly controlled by referee D Rowse who gave a fine performance in very difficult weather conditions.
Man of the match was Phil Bain.
Division Two
Camels in charge
Camelford..............................4
St Cleer....................................1
THIS match was effectively over within the first quarter of the match, by which time Camelford had shown their visitors what to expect with an early effort which skimmed the post, before they repeated the trick twice putting the ball firmly where it belonged in the back of the goal to give themselves a 2-0 lead within fifteen minutes. Saints, with seemingly other things in their minds then fell further behind after 26 minutes when an attack broke down and while sauntering back Camelford increased their lead.
Saints' were further embarrassed by their inept first half display when an error in defence lead to the fourth and the home team firmly in the driving seat with half time beckoning.
With several well chosen expletives ringing in their ears after their halt time cuppa, St Cleer approached the game in a much more positive way after the break and were rewarded with a shot from the edge of the box through a crowded goalmouth which found the far bottom corner from Wall half way through the half but despite a continual bombardment on the home defence who were pinned back in their own penalty area for large portions of the half, St Cleer could not increase their score and finally finished on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline. Some pride had been regained with their second half performance but in truth the damage done in the first quarter proved too much. Saints players will need to look to their own laurels if they are to fulfil their potential in this league and must take heed of this defeat in the future.
League Cup
Skilful Niblett
DOBWALLS......................................8
ROCHE..............................................0
IN atrocious conditions Dobwalls entertained Roche in league Cup action. The team started in buoyant mood after a brace of easy victories and again dominated against a gusty opposition from the lower leagues.
Martin Polatch was in top form and scored a hat trick in the first 40 minutes, Jeremy Randle added a fourth before the break.
The second half saw Randle score his second and Martin Polatch scored his fourth to extent the lead. The goal of the match came curtesy of Andy Sheer whose curling short beat everyone.
Jeremy Randle completed his hat trick when Rob Cole was felled in the box and confidently converted the spot kick. This was another easy run out for the premier league side despite having to make a number of changes due to injury.
Johnny Niblett received the man of the match award for a superb display of skillful play in tricky conditions. He also hit the woodwork with two long range shots.
The team were sponsored by Jefferys Estate Agents and the match ball by Andrew Kent Agricultural Contractors.
