The annual Black Prince Flower Boat Festival will take place on Monday, May 6.

The boat is carried on the shoulders of Royal Navy members through the villages of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand to bid farewell to winter, welcome summer and ask for a good harvest from land and sea.

It is believed to be one of the oldest Spring Celtic festivals in Cornwall, third only to Padstow’s Obby Oss and Helstons’ Flurry Dance. Local people decorate their homes with greenery and colours of the festival, red and white ribbons and bunting.

The procession, which starts at 10am at Millbrook Village Hall, will be led by Rame Peninsula Town Crier Clive O’Shaunessy and an entourage of guest town criers and consorts from all parts of the UK. Visiting Morris dancers, schoolchildren and villagers follow with the traditional Black Prince tune played. The community are encouraged to wear red and white with some dressing as green men .

The boat is eventually launched in Cawsand Bay at 4.30pm.
