Members of the Harbour Commissioners and the Looe Fishermen's Protection Association recently held a lively meeting at which various topics were discussed including the need to dredge the river bed.
Boats had been complaining they were hitting the edges of the middle sand banks when turning in the river, especially those who were second berthers out. Mr C Newman said there was plenty of water at his berth by the fish market but that he 'bounced' along to Middleton's Corner, and Mr Bob Woodman (LFPA secretary), of the Hartilly, said that he couldn't get up past the Lunar Beam if she was in her berth. Mr Billy Hocking (LFPA chairman) said the channel had become narrower but there would be a huge amount to dig away.
Harbour Master Mr Ted Webb observed that the river was dredged four years ago and pointed out the problems which would be involved if the work was to be carried out. This would include licenses to remove and dump, and special permission to tip toxic material which would now apply to the material involved. However, Mr Robert Newton (Harbour chairman) said the width of the river must be addressed and a channel opened up to Middleton's Corner.
